Community survey and excavations at Hoghton Tower

Sum awarded: £6,200

The fortified manor house of Hoghton Tower in Lancashire was built on a hill with views over south-west Lancashire. Dating from the 1560s, the tower built for Thomas Hoghton may have been built on a 12th-century castle. The Hoghton Tower Preservation Trust was formed to investigate the tower’s history and ensure its preservation.

We are funding architectural survey and analysis of the tower, a geophysical survey, and community excavation. The Hoghton Tower Preservation Trust will be working with the University of Salford’s Centre for Applied Archaeology to carry out the work. The aim is to better understand the Elizabethan buildings and involve volunteers and students to encourage a community of people enthusiastic about Houghton Tower’s history.
