Geophysical and earthwork surveys at Bolingbroke

Sum awarded: £6,010

This project led by Heritage Lincolnshire will undertake resistivity and magnetometer surveys of Bolingbroke Castle, followed by an earthwork survey of the ‘Rout Yard’ and Dewy Hill south of the castle.

Bolingbroke Castle was founded by the Earl of Chester in the 1220s, and has a roughly hexagonal design. The castle became the property of the house of Lancaster, and as a result was the birthplace of Henry IV. Stone walls still stand in parts nearly 3m high, though the castle was slighted in the 1640s during the English Civil War.
